The VII Legion are the Praetorians of Terra, masters of void-craft and siege architecture whose mobile fortress-monastery, 'Phalanx', is a continent-sized pre-Imperial battle-station discovered orbiting Inwit by Rogal Dorn. Beneath their stoic, stone-faced discipline lies a profoundly masochistic psychology: because Imperial Fists gene-seed lacks both the Betcher's Gland (poison saliva) and the Sus-an Membrane (hibernation coma), the sons of Dorn cannot enter suspended animation when mortally wounded—they feel every ounce of agony until death.

Instead of lamenting this flaw, the Chapter ritualizes pain through nerve-induction 'Pain Gloves', scrimshawing the microscopic bones of fallen brothers, and the 'Last Wall Protocol'—a secret contingency code instilled by Rogal Dorn that legally binds all Imperial Fists successor Chapters to reform as the unified VII Legion if Holy Terra itself is ever threatened with destruction.
