Where the Hive Tyrant is the cunning brain of a Tyranid invasion, the Carnifex is its eight-tonne fist of bone and muscle. First catalogued by Imperial forces during the space boarding actions and planetary slaughter of Hive Fleet Behemoth's march toward Macragge, the Carnifex has remained the Hive Mind's premier heavy assault bioform across every subsequent Hive Fleet — not only because its ceramite-dense carapace can shrug off bolter fire and artillery shrapnel without slowing down, but because its relatively simple biological template requires surprisingly little biomass for the Norn-Queens to mass-produce.
Those earliest Behemoth specimens earned the terrified Imperial nickname "Screamer-Killers" (Carnifex ululare) for the ear-splitting, ululating shriek they emitted as rasping plates inside their oesophagus energised gut-generated bio-plasma before spitting incandescent bolts across the battlefield. In the centuries since, the Ordo Xenos has recorded dozens of specialized subspecies adapted for every theatre of war: spiked Thornbacks (Carnifex vorantii) bred to shred massed infantry, acid-spewing Bile-Beasts (Carnifex bilius), twin-gunned Venomspitters (Carnifex arbylis), and fortress-smashing Stone-Crushers.
Left without the guiding synaptic touch of a Hive Tyrant or Warrior brood, a Carnifex possesses almost no self-awareness at all, reverting immediately to a blind, unstoppable rampage that tramples everything in its path until only lascannons, melta beams or plasma volleys to its vital organs can bring it down. Even when severed from synaptic oversight, a wounded Carnifex will continue battering its way through ferrocrete walls and armoured hulls until its brain-stem is physically incinerated.
Appearance & wargear
Standing roughly four metres tall and weighing between eight and nine tonnes, a Carnifex is a hunched, barrel-chested colossus encased in layered slabs ofribbed chitin studded with spore cysts, chitin thorns and crushing bone tusks. Its squat head glares out from beneath a thick cranial battering-shield, while its four upper limbs can be grown as house-sized Crushing Claws, twin pairs of Scything Talons, or fused into heavy symbiotic bio-cannons such as the Heavy Venom Cannon, Stranglethorn Cannon and twin Deathspitters, balanced by a muscular, bone-clubbed or scything tail.

Battlefield role & tactics
Used by the Hive Mind as living main battle tanks and siege rams, Carnifex broods spearhead starship boarding actions, smash through ferrocrete bastion walls and charge headlong into Imperial armour companies. Once a Carnifex's straining alien musculature builds its stampede up to full momentum, the ground shakes beneath its hooves; infantry squads are flattened into paste, Rhinos and Leman Russ tanks are flipped onto their roofs or peeled open like tin cans, and only super-heavy vehicles or fortress walls have any hope of surviving the impact.
