Lore & origins

The Genestealer is a Tyranid bioform designed by the Hive Mind to infiltrate the worlds of other intelligent species. It was the first Tyranid the Imperium encountered, long before the hive fleets arrived. At first it was thought to be a separate species native to the moons of Ymgarl, where it bred through leech-like Csith. Only after Hive Fleet Behemoth was defeated at Macragge, and Technomagi spent years classifying the dead, was it confirmed that Genestealers were Tyranids. Infiltrating broods had been working their way across the galaxy for thousands of years, stowing away on cargo ships, refugee craft and drifting space hulks.

Their most terrible weapon is the way they reproduce. A Genestealer hypnotises its victim with its gaze and drives its long, tube-like tongue, the ovipositor known as the Genestealer's Kiss, into the host's body, implanting its own genetic material. The victim wakes hours later with no wound and no memory, and goes on to have children who are hybrids. Over four generations the hybrids look ever more human, until the fifth generation produces a new purestrain with a genome identical to the original. The first purestrain becomes the cult's Patriarch, often swelling into an obese and potently psychic monstrosity. Even one purestrain carried by an unwitting pilot to a fertile world can spawn enough tainted progeny to take that world from the bottom up. The opening of the Great Rift has made infestations more rampant than ever.

Genestealers are cunning and independent. They are among the few Tyranids able to exist without the Hive Mind's controlling influence, using brood telepathy to form tight-knit groups that can lie hidden for decades or centuries before rising as a hive fleet arrives. Other species have their own names for them. The Aeldari call them the Hider in Plain Sight, Hearth-lurkers, Bloodshadows and Kin-thieves. To the T'au they are Y'he'mokushi, beasts of the Silent Hunger who "steal form as well as substance".

Appearance & wargear

Genestealers stand in a perpetual crouch on reverse-jointed, clawed legs and have two pairs of arms. The upper pair ends in razor claws that can slice through Tactical Dreadnought Armour. The lower pair is gnarled, hand-like and dexterous enough to work simple devices, yet still strong enough to tear a limb from its socket. A thick tail aids their balance as they race over rubble. Their bulbous heads hold a disproportionately large brain, and their jaws are lined with ripping teeth. Isolated broods, such as those on the Sin of Damnation, are typically blue-indigo, while hive fleet broods take on their fleet's colours, anything from bone-white to jet black. Imperial records give an average height of 1.9 metres.

Battlefield role & tactics

In the hive fleets Genestealers are the ultimate shock troops and vanguard, scouting worlds for the swarm and charging with lightning speed. Within a cult, the purestrains are the Patriarch's sacred brood and its most lethal fighters, emerging from the shadows at the uprising to tear through the defenders. Their carapace and dense muscle can shrug off a volley of lasgun fire, and duplicate organ systems inherited from their hosts let them keep fighting after serious wounds. Imperial forces are taught to aim for the thorax and abdomen.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.

Notable battles & users

  • The Sin of Damnation: one of the infested space hulks whose name became forever synonymous with Genestealers, and a known haunt of blue-indigo broods.
  • Ymgarl: once thought to be the Genestealers' home. Its tentacle-mawed strain, born from Csith hosts, is always purestrain whatever its ancestry.
  • The Scythes of the Emperor: infected Space Marines of this Chapter have resisted the psychic pull of the Kiss, though even they wear psychic dampening hoods against the Broodmind.
  • Imperial folk names: 'Snatcher-devils', 'Cave Nightmares', 'Clawed Changelings', 'Sewerstalkers' and 'Ghosts', each world with its own legend.
