Lore & origins

The Vespid are an insectoid species of the T'au Empire. The T'au call them Mal'kor, from mal ("insect") and kor ("air"), and Imperial soldiers call them Stingwings. Their homeworld, Vespid, is a gas giant three light-years galactic south of the D'yanoi Sept, with violet skies racked by endless storms. Thousands of flat-topped rock islands float in its upper atmosphere, held up by trapped lighter-than-air gas and tapering beneath like vast stalactites. The Vespid hollow them out with diamond-hard claws, like termite mounds. Exotic crystals grow in the deep, high-pressure lower levels, and only the larger females are tough enough to reach and harvest them. Those crystals underpin all Vespid technology.

When the Water Caste made contact, the Vespid already had a stable planetary government and weapons of mass destruction powerful enough to make total war between their nations unthinkable, but no spaceflight. They also had a mindset so utterly alien that the T'au could not even get them to recognise the T'au as fellow sapients, and little progressed beyond crystal trade. At the Ethereals' command an interface device was built. The moment it was used, the Vespid not only recognised the T'au but grasped the Greater Good and their place in it, and calmly accepted total annexation. Senior Vespid, the strain leaders, now wear these communion helms and pass the Ethereals' will to the rest. Factions of the Inquisition suspect the helms may in fact be controlling the Vespid.

Unlike the mercenary Kroot, the Vespid truly believe in the Greater Good, and the Fire Caste counts them more reliable allies than even the Kroot. Like the T'au, they are deeply deferential to their leaders. An unspecified "cultural incompatibility" keeps contact between Vespid and Kroot to a minimum. Some T'au commanders once saw little point in Stingwings over more Fire Warriors or battlesuits. Today the specialist academies on Vespid struggle to keep up with demand.

Appearance & wargear

Vespid are bipedal and vaguely insectoid, somewhat taller than a human, encased in a barbed chitin exoskeleton, with sensitive antennae and diamond-hard claws. Three pairs of eyes run in two lines down their faces, seeing in ultraviolet, visible light and infrared, probably all at once. Their hard chitin wings give off a constant ultrasonic tone that they use to control their crystal technology. Chitin colour varies by strain, with further differences in patterning and mottling between the many Vespid nations. Some carry a stinger on the abdomen, which Imperial propaganda dismisses as vestigial, although some strains have shown that theirs can be venomous.

Battlefield role & tactics

Stingwings harass and destroy heavy infantry, above all Space Marines, which the T'au have always struggled to fight. Their neutron blasters combine T'au engineering with unstable radioactive crystals and strip atoms from their targets. Because the crystal's harmonics depend on the resonance of Vespid wings, only Vespid can use neutron weapons effectively. Commanders deploy them alongside Crisis battlesuits or in support of Pathfinders. They can digest almost any organic matter and resist radiation, so large teams can roam far without supply lines.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.

Notable battles & users

  • Firewing Strain: orange and black, known for an aggression and ferocity that suits the tactics of Vior'la cadres.
  • Storm's Echo Strain: said to hear so keenly that they can perceive their enemies' heartbeats. The Nebulae Strain has poisonous stingers.
  • Zchllchk: a strain leader in the short story Voice of Experience.
  • The Farsight Expedition: Vespid stalactite-shaped nest vessels sailed as auxiliaries in the Grand Reclamation Fleet.
