Few close-combat weapons in the blood-soaked history of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy carry a pedigree as savage as Gorechild. Originally forged alongside its twin chainaxe, Gorefather, by the master armoursmiths of the World Eaters Legion for their Primarch Angron, Gorechild was built to withstand the superhuman fury of the Red Angel himself. For decades of compliance campaigns across the galaxy, Angron swung the matched pair of massive, screaming chainaxes at the head of the Twelfth Legion, wading through xenos warlords and rebel armies until their bronze housings were permanently stained dark with dried arterial blood.
During the Shadow Crusade on the Ultramar world of Armatura, however, Angron drove Gorechild and Gorefather so relentlessly through stone fortifications and Ultramarines battle-plate that their motors seized and their mica-dragon teeth stripped and shattered. Uncaring of even the finest artisan wargear, the Primarch cast the ruined axes aside in the rubble of Armatura and moved on to claim heavier blades. Yet Khârn, Equerry to the Primarch and Captain of the World Eaters' 8th Assault Company, refused to let his genetic sire's discarded weapon remain buried in the dust.
Recovering the broken frame of Gorechild after the battle, Khârn had the Dark Mechanicum and the Legion's Forge-wrights rebuild and slightly rescale the haft so that an Astartes warrior could wield the Primarch-sized chainaxe in one or two hands. From the burning trenches of Terra and the blood-mad slaughter of Skalathrax to the Thirteen Black Crusades of the forty-first millennium, Gorechild has never left Khârn the Betrayer's bare, chain-wrapped right arm—reaping millions of skulls for the Blood God Khorne.
Design, mechanism & battlefield effect
Unlike a power axe or a Daemon weapon that relies on a molecular disruption field or bound warp-entity to slice through armour, Gorechild achieves its terrifying armour-piercing lethality through sheer mechanical violence and irreplicable xenos materials. Its massive, single-bladed axe-head houses an over-torqued, high-compression rotary engine whose exhaust vents belch black promethium smoke and deafening mechanical roars whenever Khârn depresses the grip-throttle.
Driven around the perimeter of that heavy bronze-and-iron housing is a reinforced chain-track set with the diamond-hard teeth of a mica-dragon—an apex predatory beast native to the death world of Luther McIntyre IX. Even at rest, a single mica-dragon tooth is sharp and dense enough to score adamantium; spun at thousands of revolutions per minute by a Primarch-grade motor, the teeth chew effortlessly through Tactical Dreadnought Armour, Dreadnought sarcophagi, and battle tank side-skirts without ever dulling or snapping.
Heavy brass chains wrap directly from the pommel of Gorechild around Khârn's scarred, unarmoured forearm in the ancient gladiator tradition of Nuceria, ensuring that the axe can never be disarmed or dropped so long as the Betrayer draws breath.
Patterns, variants & doctrine
Gorechild is one of a kind, yet its lineage is shared with its larger twin, Gorefather—which was likewise recovered from Armatura in later millennia and has passed through the hands of several World Eaters Chaos Lords and Berzerker champions. Across the XII Legion and the warbands of the Blood God, thousands of Khorne Berzerkers and Eightbound fashion their own oversized chainaxes in direct imitation of Gorechild, fitting double-toothed tracks and Nucerian wrist-chains to honour the Primarch and his chosen champion.
After ten thousand years of continuous slaughter within the Eye of Terror and realspace alike, Gorechild's brass skull-motifs and whirling mica-dragon teeth have absorbed such a saturation of bloodshed and Khornate blessings that the axe can tear apart even the unnatural protections of psykers and force-fields through raw, pitiless momentum.
