Where a power sword is an instrument of duelling finesse, the power fist is a siege engine worn on the arm. Originally adapted from heavy exo-suit wrecking and bulkhead-breaching gauntlets used aboard Dark Age of Technology starships and asteroid mines, the power fist was refined during the Unification Wars and the Great Crusade into one of the most feared close-combat weapons in the Imperium's arsenal. To see a Space Marine Terminator or Captain stride through a storm of small-arms fire and punch his fist straight through the glacis plate of a battle tank is to understand why the weapon has endured unchanged for ten millennia.
Among the Adeptus Astartes, the power fist is standard issue for Tactical Terminator Squads—whose Indomitus-pattern exo-armour was itself derived from hazard-suit designs—and a favoured upgrade for Sergeants, Captains and Veteran warriors who expect to face monstrous xenos bio-forms, Ork Warbosses, or heavily armoured traitors. In the Era Indomitus, Imperial Fists 3rd Company Captain Tor Garadon carries the Hand of Defiance, an artificer-wrought power fist overcharged to literally blast fortifications into rubble with a single blow, while Primaris Aggressor Squads march into battle wearing twin Boltstorm or Flamestorm Gauntlets built upon the same crushing servo-fist architecture.
Though built primarily for Space Marines, smaller and heavily braced power fists are also worn by exceptional baseline humans of the Astra Militarum, the Inquisition and the Ecclesiarchy, augmented with suspensors and hydraulic shoulder harnesses so their weight does not rip the wielder's arm from its socket.
Design, mechanism & battlefield effect
A power fist consists of an oversized, multi-layered ceramite and adamantium gauntlet housing a bundle of high-torque servo-actuators, pneumatic pistons and an internal molecular disruption generator. Because the gauntlet is far too massive and heavy to be moved at normal fencing speed, the wielder gives up the ability to parry swiftly in exchange for catastrophic impact force. When the warrior closes his real hand inside the inner control glove, the outer armoured fingers slam shut with enough hydraulic pressure to crush a Space Marine's helmet like an eggshell even before the energy field is switched on.
Once the disruption field is active, the entire outer shell of the gauntlet glows with a crackling nimbus of blue-white energy. As the fist strikes a target, the disruption field tears apart the molecular bonds of the armour or flesh at the point of impact while the servo-assisted blow delivers the kinetic force of a wrecking ball. Solid ferrocrete bunker walls crumble into dust, Dreadnought sarcophagi are wrenched open, and armoured knights are lifted off their feet by a single uppercut.
Because the energy generator and actuator bundles are vulnerable to catastrophic feedback if severed, power fists are heavily armoured around the forearm and connected to the wearer's power pack through thick, ribbed armoured cabling tucked beneath the pauldron.
Patterns, variants & doctrine
Over the millennia, artificers of Mars and the Space Marine Chapters have developed several famous offshoots of the standard power fist. Foremost among them is the Chainfist, carried by Terminator boarding squads to cut through the metres-thick adamantium bulkheads of space hulks and starships; it mounts a miniature, disruption-sheathed chainsword blade directly onto the underside of the power fist's wrist. Another close cousin is the Lightning Claw, which replaces the blunt crushing fingers with three to five curved power blades projecting from the back of the gauntlet, trading anti-tank punching power for blindingly fast, flesh-ripping slashes.
Numerous legendary relic gauntlets also build upon the power fist template, from Marneus Calgar's twin Gauntlets of Ultramar and Chapter Master Pedro Kantor's Dorn's Arrow wrist-mounted storm bolter pairing, to the flamespitting Talon of Horus worn by Abaddon the Despoiler and the monstrous Bale-Claw of Tyrant of Badab Lugft Huron.
Notable patterns & relic examples
- Indomitus Terminator Power Fist: The standard close-combat armament of First Company Terminator Squads across Codex-compliant Chapters.
- Chainfist: A Terminator power fist fitted with an under-slung disruption-field chainsword attachment for sawing through starship bulkheads and tank hulls.
- The Hand of Defiance: Captain Tor Garadon's oversized Imperial Fists relic power fist, capable of pulverising fortress walls and Titan knee-joints.
- Auto-Storm & Flamestorm Gauntlets: Twin-linked Primaris Aggressor power fists integrating belt-fed bolters or promethium flamers onto the wrists.
