1 / 4 · Click to enlargeOverview
The iron-willed Primarch of Medusa, whose hands were coated in living metal. He was the first loyalist Primarch to die, beheaded by his closest brother Fulgrim at the Dropsite Massacre.
He wielded the hammer Forgebreaker, forged for him by Fulgrim, while Ferrus in turn made the sword Fireblade for his brother. At Isstvan V, he led his Legion in a furious assault on the traitors and confronted Fulgrim, who killed him with a daemon-touched blade. His death was a blow to the loyalists from which the Iron Hands never fully recovered. Ferrus Manus was the Gorgon of Medusa, primarch of the Iron Hands, and he had hands of living silver metal. He was harsh, proud and contemptuous of weakness, but deeply loyal to the Emperor. His friendship with Fulgrim, forged at the anvil when they made weapons for each other, turned into a tragedy: Fulgrim tried to win him over to Horus and then killed him when he refused.
Origins
He survived Medusa's brutal environment and slew the great wyrm Asirnoth, whose metal coated his hands.
Medusa was a harsh world of storms and predators, where survival meant constant struggle. Ferrus grew up battling its beasts and eventually killed Asirnoth, a silver wyrm whose metal flowed over his hands. He joined the Crusade and led the X Legion, whose love of machinery mirrored his own.
His capsule came down on Medusa, a dark, geologically unstable feral world close to the Eye of Terror. When he took command of the X Legion, he merged it with Medusa by force. The Legion's chapters became Clans, and Terran legionaries were ordered to replace the existing clan rulers in the only way Medusans understood, through violence. The Astartes walked among the nomad clans as demigods. He met Fulgrim in the forge beneath Mount Narodnya, the greatest in the Urals, where he was working with former Terrawatt Clan smiths and showing off his liquid-metal hands. The name Gorgon began as Fulgrim's private nickname for his blunt brother, who had little interest in art or music, and Ferrus came to like it.

The friendship was already under strain before the Heresy. In a void battle against the Diasporex, Fulgrim's gunship Firebird came under heavy fire and Ferrus rushed the Fist of Iron in to save him. Fulgrim led a boarding action to restore his pride, but a subordinate took the enemy bridge first. Influenced by his daemon-possessed Laer blade, Fulgrim spent months resenting the rescue, seeing only vanity in an act of loyalty. After the Iron Hands' 52nd Expeditionary Fleet retook Callinedes IV from the Orks, Fulgrim met Ferrus aboard the Fist of Iron and urged him to join Horus. The meeting turned into a fight. Fulgrim could not bring himself to kill his unconscious brother. He took Forgebreaker as a keepsake and left Fireblade behind. His Phoenix Guard then beheaded Ferrus's Morlock bodyguard, nearly killed First Captain Gabriel Santor and escaped.

Legacy
Ferrus's death defines the Iron Hands. Their augmentations and cold logic are a reaction to his loss, and their hatred for the Emperor's Children endures. Many Iron Hands also argue that his death started the Chapter's long slide into cold, machine-driven logic and grim isolation. The Iron Hands' worship of the machine and their scorn for the weakness of flesh deepened after his death. The legend of the Gorgon, and the hope that he might return, still shape his Chapter.
Dorn passed on the Emperor's order for the Iron Hands, Raven Guard and Salamanders to bring Horus to battle at Isstvan V. Furious at the betrayal, Ferrus welcomed it, and his anger at the Dropsite led him straight into Fulgrim's trap. After his death, the Iron Hands' bitter rejection of the flesh hardened into the doctrine that defines them, as their surviving clans became leaderless without their Primarch.
