Haarken Worldclaimer

Overview

Haarken Worldclaimer is a Raptor lord of the Black Legion and Abaddon's herald. He proclaims each world's doom to break its defenders' resolve.

He wears a jump pack and fights with the Helspear and a lightning claw, leading huge flocks of Raptors. His proclamations are broadcast not only from his own laud hailers but from the throats of a thousand acolytes. After landing he drives his spear into the ground and promises that the world will fall within eighty days. Haarken Worldclaimer is a Chaos Lord of the Black Legion and a Raptor, known as the Herald of the Apocalypse and the Proclamator of Abaddon's coming reign. He goes ahead of the Despoiler to announce the doom of Imperial worlds. His relic, the Helspear, has drunk the blood of monarchs, xenos tyrants and even rival Chaos Lords, and each demoralising kill strengthens him. He is a modern character, first appearing in the Vigilus campaign.

Origins

His origins before he became Abaddon's herald are unrecorded. He has studied the writings of Curze, Angron and Magnus.

Haarken is a scholar of dark lore as well as a warrior. He has studied the Grimoire Nostramo written by Konrad Curze, the Clotted Scrolls of Angron's threats, and even the Book of Magnus, though delving into the last cost him part of his sanity. His knowledge shapes the propaganda he uses to break enemies.

Personality

Gloating, theatrical and well-read in dark lore.

He loves the spectacle of terror, gloating over enemies whose resolve he has already shattered. He is not content to leave fighting to others, but hunts down defiant generals and champions in person to prove Abaddon's will is inevitable. His theatricality hides a calculating mind that understands the value of fear.

He is a herald who fights on the front line. Once he has made his announcement, he does not wait for Abaddon to arrive. He goes after the places where the defence is organised: supply lines, hidden war rooms and remote command bunkers. He comes down with large flocks of Raptors, roaring that the hour of doom has come and that the killing will not stop until the ground is soaked in his enemies' blood. The background stresses that this is calculated, not empty bravado. While the defenders pull troops off the front line to stop him, the Chaos armies on the ground hit their disorganised flanks and break formations that are trying to regroup. Once he lands he picks out defiant generals and champions to impale, and every death spreads more fear through the enemy ranks.

Legacy

Haarken is Abaddon's herald, the voice that proclaims the fall of world after world before the Black Legion arrives. He weaponises dread itself, broadcasting doom across worlds so that defenders are half-beaten before the battle starts. He shows how much of the Black Legion's power rests on fear and spectacle. He embodies Abaddon's understanding that despair can break worlds as surely as bombardment. Haarken is the voice of Abaddon's coming apocalypse.

The words matter as much as the blade. The background says his proclamations, broadcast through his own laud hailers and the vox-grilles and diseased throats of a thousand acolytes, carry such hatred that they can break unit cohesion, cause mass surrenders and drive listeners to suicide. That is the point of a herald, as the Traitor Legions learned long ago. A world paralysed by doubt is already half-conquered.
