Lore & origins

Called esdainn in the Aeldari tongue — and known in older Imperial records as Harlequin Warlocks — Shadowseers are the spiritual guides, storytellers and specialist phantasmancer psykers of the Harlequin masques. In performance they play the role of Fate and Fortune, acting as narrators who chant in monologue, song or rhyme while their back-mounted grenade launchers release programmed hallucinations that form duelling phantoms of light and mist in the air. In war, they turn those same gifts outward, invading the minds of their enemies to blind their senses, trap them in mental mirror-mazes, or gouge fatal psychosomatic wounds.

Unlike Craftworld Farseers, who cast runes to manipulate literal chains of events, Shadowseers eschew runes entirely and draw their power directly from Cegorach, reading the skeins of fate to see the mythic roles that mortals unknowingly assume. It is said they know the doom of all their companions, and when an Aeldari is inducted into the Harlequins, it is often a Shadowseer who peers into the recruit's future and presents the mask of the role they were fated to play. All Shadowseers are trained by a mentor and taken to the mysterious Shadow Keep — rumoured to lie on an ancient Aeldari homeworld, within the Black Library, or at the hidden heart of the Webway where the Laughing God dwells — where acolytes face brutal trials of sanity; those who fail are never seen again.

Concealing their identities behind stage names, Shadowseers serve as envoys between all branches of the Aeldari race. Remarkably, they are the only psykers permitted to walk openly through the dark spires of Commorragh, where despite deep distrust they sit in the war councils of Archons, Succubi and Haemonculi alike.

Appearance & wargear

A Shadowseer wears flowing robes over a dathedi Holo-Suit and Flip Belt, their cowl weighted with sun and moon trinkets and their belt hung with mysterious pouches and two spare Harlequin masks — said by some to belong to slain Troupe players awaiting successors. Their own mask is a smooth, featureless visor polished to a dark or silvered mirror sheen, never removed in the presence of another soul; those who gaze into it in battle see twisted nightmare visions or their own impending deathmask moments before they die. On their back rises the fluted Creidann Grenade Launcher, which arcs canisters of hallucinogenic gas in pre-programmed patterns, while in hand they bear a shuriken pistol and a Miststave that channels mental force to shatter bone and scramble a living target's perceptions into a slow-motion blur.

Battlefield role & tactics

Master practitioners of the Phantasmancy discipline, Shadowseers stride as islands of sinister calm through a bedlam of their own making. With a gesture they can pluck the image of advancing Harlequins out of enemy minds using the Veil of Tears, shroud their comrades in whirling gloom, or trap a victim inside the Mirror of Minds where seconds of real time feel like years of madness. Senior commanders known as High Shadowseers or High Warlocks — the ardathair or athesdan — advise the masque's High Troupe Master, coordinate massed Creidann barrages, and sometimes lead entire covens of Shadowseers and psychic Acolytes into battle.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
