Every Space Wolf carries the Canis Helix, a genetic sequence that gives the Chapter its keen senses and predatory instincts. It also carries a curse. During an aspirant's transformation, some candidates fail to control the change and devolve into the Wulfen: feral, wolf-like mutants that are more beast than man. Some full battle-brothers also give in to the curse in the heat of battle, losing their reason for good.
The Wulfen were linked to the 13th Company, Leman Russ's lost Great Company. After the Heresy, Russ formed a new company from survivors, and it was sent into the Eye of Terror to fight the Traitor Legions. Its warriors were cut off for ten thousand years and many changed into Wulfen. In the late 41st Millennium, during the Thirteenth Black Crusade, some of these warriors returned to Fenris.
The return of the Wulfen caused a crisis. The Dark Angels and other Chapters saw them as mutants, and some suspected Chaos was involved. The Space Wolves defended their lost brothers, insisting they were proof that the curse could be lived with. Since then Wulfen have fought in Space Wolves armies.
Wulfen are Space Wolves who have succumbed to the Curse of the Wulfen, a flaw in the Canis Helix that turns them into feral, half-wolf berserkers. In the past, Wulfen were hidden or kept secret. Many were part of the lost 13th Great Company, which vanished into the Eye of Terror during the Heresy hunting the Thousand Sons. Its Wolf Lord, Bulveye, is ten thousand years old and fought beside Leman Russ. In the 7th edition Wolftime saga, the Wulfen re-emerged from the warp into the Fenris system. Bran Redmaw, called the 'Curs'd Lord', is a Wolf Lord with the Wulfen curse.
