Zoanthropes are perhaps the strangest of all the Tyranids' myriad breeds. They are powerful psykers, apparently engineered from harvested Aeldari DNA, created solely to channel the psychic might of the Hive Mind. They serve both as psychic artillery in planetary invasions and as synapse creatures that relay the Hive Mind's commands to lesser bioforms. Their development is so extreme that their withered bodies and swollen heads are sustained entirely by psychic force. They cannot walk. They float, levitating themselves across the battlefield on a bubble of warp energy, and rival the craftworld Aeldari in psychic prowess.
For all their apparent frailty they are deadly. Their reserves of psychic power can be hurled as bolts strong enough to destroy battle tanks, boil through adamantium plate or even bring down Titans. A warp blast can kill a Space Marine outright. They are also hard to kill, because they constantly project a telekinetic barrier that turns aside shots and even physical blows, much like a natural void shield. Observers note that it flares brightly around especially powerful attacks before settling back to a uniform shimmer. Away from the Hive Mind's presence, though, they tend towards sedentary behaviour to conserve their power, care little for anything beyond their immediate reach, and put their own survival above all else.
Their power can also destroy them. Many after-action reports describe Zoanthropes "burning out" in battle. After hurling bolt after bolt, or holding their shield for too long, their craniums burst and bleed and they crash limply to the ground. Imperial psykers who have seen it compare it to the perils of the Warp that can overwhelm a human psyker's mind. Their power is not drawn from the Warp in the usual way, but from tapping into the vast gestalt will of the Hive Mind itself.
Appearance & wargear
A Zoanthrope is a shrivelled, atrophied body hanging beneath a huge, bulbous, armoured cranium, drifting above the ground in a faint shimmer of psychic force. The Ordo Xenos records its average height as about 3.5 metres and its weight as half a tonne, much of it brain, which has earned it the common soldier's name "Brain". Its species designation is Tyranicus animus aborrens. In battle it rains down bolts of incandescent psychic power.

Battlefield role & tactics
Zoanthropes drift behind the swarm, raining bolts of psychic energy on the enemy while extending the synaptic web over the lesser broods around them. Warp blasts scour infantry, while the tighter, more focused warp lance is saved for heavy armour and vehicles. Other powers reported include a silent psychic scream that strikes every living mind within twenty metres, a hypnotic gaze that freezes a single warrior in place, and the ability to tear the life force from a nearby foe to heal their own wounds. When one dies, the psychic shockwave can send nearby lesser Tyranids fleeing in panic.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
Notable battles & users
- The Doom of Malan'tai: a unique Zoanthrope of terrible infamy. Some Imperial xenographers believe the Neurothropes are its progeny.
- Neurothropes: alpha Zoanthropes that leech life force from their foes to fuel their powers, and can heal nearby Zoanthropes against burnout.
- Moloch: recorded by the Ordo Xenos as the world where Zoanthropes were first encountered.
- Subspecies: the Horror Zoanthrope, Zoanthrope Screamer, Catalyst Zoanthrope and Biothrope are all recorded variants.
