Lore & history

Known affectionately and profanely across ten thousand regiments of the Astra Militarum as the "Backbreaker" or the "Bruiser," the Heavy Bolter is the premier anti-infantry support weapon of the Imperium of Man. Essentially an upscaled, high-cyclic-rate cousin of the Space Marine bolter, it fires fist-sized, 1.0-calibre rocket-propelled shells capable of blowing an Ork Boy in half, punching through light armoured carriers, and turning an advancing horde of Tyranid hormagaunts into a shredded carpet of chitin and ichor. Wherever an Imperial defence line holds against overwhelming numbers, the rhythmic, deafening thud-thud-thud of emplaced Heavy Bolters forms the heartbeat of the battle.

In the Astra Militarum, the weight of a Mars-pattern Heavy Bolter, its tripod mount and its steel ammunition chests requires a two-man Heavy Weapons Team—hence its "Backbreaker" nickname among the gunners and loaders who must lug it across kilometres of shell-pocked mud. For a Space Marine of a Devastator Squad, Tactical Squad, or Scout Squad, however, the weapon is carried slung across the chest on a gyrostabilized suspensor harness and fired from the hip, fed by a flexible metallic disintegrating belt snaking directly from a massive backpack ammunition hopper.

Within the Adepta Sororitas, the Heavy Bolter represents the grandest expression of the Boltgun pillar of their Holy Trinity, carried into battle by Retributor Squads, Mortifier penitent engines and Morvenn Vahl's Paragon Warsuits. Across Imperial vehicle armouries, twin-linked and sponson-mounted Heavy Bolters bristle from the hulls of Land Raiders, Razorbacks, Predators, Leman Russ tanks, Chimeras and Baneblade super-heavies.

Design, mechanism & battlefield effect

While a standard Astartes boltgun chambers a .75-calibre shell, the Heavy Bolter steps up to a massive 1.0-calibre (twenty-five millimetre) mass-reactive rocket bolt. Each shell houses a significantly heavier high-explosive core and a higher-impulse solid rocket motor, giving the weapon nearly double the effective range and far greater armour-piercing and blast trauma than an infantry rifle.

Instead of feeding from a box or sickle magazine that would run dry in two seconds of sustained fire, the Heavy Bolter draws rounds from a belt feed connected either to a side-mounted munition box or a Space Marine's backpack auto-loader. An electrically driven feed-pawl and heavy reciprocating bolt assembly cycle the weapon at hundreds of rounds per minute, while an oversized perforated barrel jacket and quick-change barrel latch help keep the chamber from warping under the ferocious heat of continuous fire.

Because the recoil and muzzle blast of a 1.0-calibre automatic cannon are immense, Astartes patterns incorporate an under-slung front chainsaw-style grip, a broad frontal blast-shield to protect the gunner's hands and torso from return fire, and auto-sense target-lead telemetry linked straight to the warrior's helmet display.

Patterns, variants & doctrine

Across the Imperium, numerous patterns of the Heavy Bolter serve specialised roles. Space Marine Devastators and Tactical Squads carry the Mars-Maximus pattern with its backpack belt-chute, while Scout Squads often load theirs with single-shot Hellfire Shells that burst into clouds of flesh-dissolving mutagenic acid upon impact. In the Era Indomitus, Primaris Heavy Intercessor squads clad in Mark X Gravis armour carry Cawl's Executor Heavy Bolter and Hellstorm Heavy Bolter as squad-level support weapons alongside their Heavy Bolt Rifles.

Among the Deathwatch, veterans wield the revered Infernus Heavy Bolter—a masterwork combination weapon that pairs a belt-fed Heavy Bolter with an under-slung Heavy Flamer so a single kill-team gunner can mow down xenos swarms at long range and incinerate survivors at close quarters. Vehicle crews mount Twin Heavy Bolters in the turrets of Razorbacks and the hull fronts of Land Raiders and Baneblades, while Chaos Space Marine Havocs carry ancient, gargoyle-mouthed Heavy Bolters that spit warp-tainted shells.

Notable patterns & relic examples

  • Mars-Maximus Astartes Heavy Bolter: The backpack-belt-fed support weapon of Space Marine Devastator, Tactical and Scout Squads.
  • Astra Militarum Tripod Heavy Bolter ('The Backbreaker'): The two-man anti-infantry support weapon of Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons Squads and tank sponsons.
  • Infernus Heavy Bolter (Deathwatch): A bespoke Deathwatch combi-heavy weapon marrying a Heavy Bolter with an under-slung Heavy Flamer.
  • Hellfire Shell Loadout: Specialised mutagenic-acid canister shells fired from Space Marine Heavy Bolters to dissolve monstrous Tyranid bio-forms.
