At first glance, an uninitiated Imperial Guardsman might mistake the long, notched trench-dagger or pitted broadsword in a Plague Marine's fist for a neglected piece of scrap metal that should shatter on its first parry. Its edge is serrated with rust, its fuller is choked with coagulated slime and black pus, and clouds ofbloated blowflies buzz lazily around its hilt. That illusion lasts only until the blade makes contact. To the Death Guard of the Fourteenth Legion, the Plague Knife and its larger cousin, the Balesword, are sacred vessels of Grandfather Nurgle's bounty—blades that have steeped for ten thousand years in the pestilential cauldrons of the Plague Planet.
Every Plague Marine carries at least one Plague Knife at his belt alongside his bolter and Blight Grenades, while squad Champions, Blightlord Terminators and Plague Surgeons wield two-handed or single-handed Baleswords and Bubotic Axes. When the Death Guard march out of a bank of buzzing toxic fog, they do not need lightning-fast fencing reflexes; their bloated, pain-immune bodies simply absorb the enemy's blows and drive a rusted Plague Knife home through a visor lens or gorget seam.
Even if a Space Marine's Larraman's Organ and Oolitic Kidney could normally neutralise a hundred mortal bioweapons in seconds, the warp-born contagions clinging to a Plague Knife bypass Astartes physiology completely, turning proud heroes into weeping mounds of necrotic sludge.
Design, mechanism & battlefield effect
A Plague Knife begins its life as a heavy Astartes combat blade or trench cleaver, around half a metre in length, before being ritually submerged in the foulest effluvia of Nurgle's Garden or hammered out on the diseased anvils of Eliathada. Rather than weakening the metal, the supernatural corrosion of Nurgle hardens the pitted iron to the durability of adamantium while giving the microscopic serrations along the rusted edge a terrifying capacity to tear flesh and score ceramite.
Deep grooves, pits and hollow channels along the blade retain a perpetually replenishing film of virulent warp-pathogens, necrotic slime and acidic ichor. The instant the blade breaks skin or punctures an environmental suit seal, these supernatural toxins flood into the bloodstream and soul simultaneously: flesh blackens and sloughs off the bone in seconds, blood curdles into foul tallow, and the victim's lungs fill with buzzing flies.
A Balesword elevates this horror further by combining a longer, double-edged plague blade with a corrupted disruption field or bound Nurgling-malice, allowing Blightlord Terminators to shear cleanly through Terminator plate while infecting everything the edge touches.
Patterns, variants & doctrine
Within the Vectoriums of the Death Guard, plague-blessed melee weapons take several distinct forms. Rank-and-file Plague Marines carry the classic Trench Plague Knife—either singly alongside a bolter or paired in both hands with a Bubotic Axe for close-quarters boarding assaults. Heavy melee specialists swing the Great Plague Cleaver or the three-headed Flail of Corruption, whose rusted censer-balls leak clouds of blinding miasma that dissolve armour before the spikes even hit.
Among the Blightlord Terminators and Death Guard officers, the Balesword and Bubotic Axe are the weapons of choice, while Tallymen, Foul Blightspawn and Plague Surgeons carry specialized infected scalpels and baleswords to harvest corrupted gene-seed from fallen Loyalist Space Marines.
Notable patterns & relic examples
- Death Guard Plague Knife: The ubiquitous rust-pitted, contagion-dripping trench blade carried by every Plague Marine of the XIV Legion.
- Balesword: A larger, disruption-sheathed plague broadsword wielded by Blightlord Terminators, Plague Champions and Death Guard Lords.
- Bubotic Axe & Great Plague Cleaver: Heavy armour-splitting axes encrusted with living Nurgle's Rot and corrosive filth.
- Flail of Corruption: A three-headed censer-flail swung by Plague Marine melee specialists to saturate whole squads in necrotic miasma.
