At a glance

Vigilus is a hive world in the Segmentum Obscurus that became one of the most important planets in the Imperium after the opening of the Great Rift. When the Rift tore the galaxy in two, Vigilus found itself guarding the Nachmund Gauntlet, one of the few stable passages between the Imperium Sanctus and the Imperium Nihilus. Whoever held Vigilus held the key to the Gauntlet, and with it the ability to move fleets and armies across the Rift.

This made Vigilus a target. In the first years of the new era, it was attacked by Orks, rocked by a Genestealer Cult uprising and finally invaded by Abaddon the Despoiler and the Black Legion. Marneus Calgar was sent to defend it, and he was named Lord Defender of Vigilus. The wars that followed devastated the planet, but Vigilus did not fall.

The battles for Vigilus became a symbol of the Imperium's struggle in the Era Indomitus. They showed that the Imperium could still fight and win, but they also showed the terrible price of victory. Vigilus survived, but it was scarred forever.

Geography & environment

Vigilus is a world of vast hive cities and blasted wastelands. Its hives sprawl across the planet's surface, each a world unto itself, with towering spires, crowded habs and teeming underhives. Between the hives lie wastelands of dust, rock and toxic waste, where little lives and nothing grows. The air is thick with pollution, and the planet's ecosystem has long since been destroyed.

The hive cities are linked by networks of highways, railways and tunnels, but these connections are fragile, and they were badly damaged during the wars. Each hive is governed by its own leaders, who answer to the Vigilian Senate. The Senate oversees the planet's defence, its industries and its relationship with the rest of the Imperium.

The planet's water was always one of its most precious resources, drawn from ice and from deep reservoirs, and controlling it was a matter of life and death for the hives. During the wars, water became a weapon, as both attackers and defenders sought to cut off their enemies' supplies.

The great hives

Hyperia is the planet's capital hive, and it is the seat of the Vigilian Senate. Its spires house the planet's rulers, and its fortifications are among the strongest on Vigilus. It was a primary target in each of the wars, and it suffered terribly. Yet it never fell, and its survival became a symbol of the planet's defiance.

Megaborealis is the forge-hive of the Adeptus Mechanicus. It is ruled by Fabricator-Locum Vaila Haloscreed, a member of the Senate and one of the most powerful figures on the planet. Its forges produce weapons, vehicles and machinery for the defenders of Vigilus, and its servitors and tech-priests are vital to the planet's war effort. Its industries also poisoned the planet's environment, and its tech-priests are not beloved by the people of the other hives.

Other hives, such as Oteck, were home to millions of citizens who worked in the planet's industries. Some of these hives were devastated in the wars, their populations decimated and their spires reduced to ruins. Others survived, but they were scarred by the fighting, and their people lived in fear.

The Nachmund Gauntlet

The Nachmund Gauntlet is one of the few stable passages through the Great Rift. Before the Rift opened, it was an unremarkable region of space. But when the Rift tore across the galaxy, the Gauntlet became a vital lifeline, one of the few places where ships could cross from one half of the Imperium to the other. Vigilus lies at its mouth, and the planet's position made it one of the most strategically important worlds in the galaxy.

The Gauntlet is not entirely safe. Its passages are narrow and dangerous, and they are haunted by warp storms, daemons and pirates. But for the Imperium, it is a vital route, and its defence is paramount. The forces of Chaos also recognise its importance, and they have sought to seize it for themselves. Vigilus became the place where these two ambitions collided.

History

Before the Rift

Before the Great Rift, Vigilus was an unremarkable hive world. It contributed to the Imperium's tithes, and it maintained its own defence forces. Its hives grew and prospered, and its people lived and died in the shadow of the spires. Few outside the sector had ever heard of it, and its own people rarely thought about the stars beyond their polluted skies. That would change overnight, when the sky split open and Vigilus found itself standing at one of the most important crossroads in the galaxy.

The War of Beasts

When the Great Rift opened, Vigilus was suddenly thrust into the spotlight. The first threat came from the Orks. A vast Speed Waaagh! descended on the planet, its warbands racing across the wastelands in buggies, bikes and battlewagons. They raided the hives, wrecked the highways and slaughtered the defenders. The Orks were eventually driven back, but they were never fully defeated, and they remained a threat in the planet's wastelands.

The cult uprising

While the Orks raged, a hidden threat emerged from within. A Genestealer Cult had festered in the underhives of Vigilus for generations, and it rose up in a sudden, coordinated revolt. The cultists struck at key targets across the planet, sowing chaos and confusion. The uprising was brutally suppressed, but its effects were devastating, and the planet was weakened further.

The War of Nightmares

The final and greatest threat was the arrival of Abaddon the Despoiler. The Black Legion invaded Vigilus with a vast army of Chaos Space Marines, daemons and cultists. Their aim was to seize the Nachmund Gauntlet and to break the Imperium's hold on the region. The fighting was savage, and the planet was brought to the brink of destruction. But the defenders, led by Marneus Calgar, held on. In the end, Abaddon withdrew, though not before he had inflicted terrible damage on the planet and achieved at least some of his hidden aims.

The Lord Defender

When Vigilus came under threat, Marneus Calgar was dispatched to defend it. As one of the Imperium's greatest commanders, he was a natural choice. He was named Lord Defender of Vigilus, giving him authority over the planet's defence. He organised the defenders, coordinated the efforts of the Space Marines, the Astra Militarum and the Adeptus Mechanicus, and led the fight against the Orks, the Genestealer Cult and the Black Legion.

Calgar faced many challenges. The defenders were divided, with different factions vying for power and influence. The Vigilian Senate was riven by rivalries, and its members were often more concerned with their own interests than with the planet's defence. Calgar had to balance these competing interests while fighting a war on several fronts. His leadership was crucial to the planet's survival.

Calgar paid a heavy price for his command. He fought at the front when he had to, and he left Vigilus grievously wounded. Not long afterwards, at the urging of Roboute Guilliman, he underwent the dangerous procedure known as crossing the Rubicon Primaris, emerging as a Primaris Space Marine. Many in the Ultramarines see his survival of both Vigilus and the Rubicon as proof that their Chapter Master is as unbreakable as the world he defended.

Calgar's defence of Vigilus was one of his greatest achievements. Against overwhelming odds, he held the planet and kept the Gauntlet open. His leadership inspired the defenders, and his tactical genius allowed them to defeat enemies that should have overwhelmed them.

The Vigilian Senate

The Vigilian Senate was the planet's ruling body, made up of representatives from the various hives and the Imperial institutions on the planet. Before the wars, it governed Vigilus with relative stability. But when the planet came under threat, the Senate's divisions were exposed. Its members argued over resources, strategy and authority, and their quarrels hindered the defence.

Calgar's arrival changed the balance of power. As Lord Defender, he had authority over the Senate in matters of war, and he used it to impose order. Yet he also needed the Senate's cooperation, for its members controlled the planet's resources and its people. He worked to win their support, while making clear that he would not tolerate any obstruction of the planet's defence.

The Senate's survival through the wars was not guaranteed. Some of its members died in the fighting, and the discovery of a cult in the underhives made every senator a potential suspect in the eyes of the Inquisition. The Senate that emerged from the wars was smaller and more united, but it was also more dependent on the Imperium's support.

The wastelands

Beyond the hives, Vigilus is a wasteland of dust and rock. Its surface was poisoned by millennia of industry, and little grows there. The wastelands are crossed by highways and pipelines, but they are otherwise empty, save for scavengers and outcasts. Before the wars, few citizens of Vigilus ever ventured outside their hives.

The Orks changed that. Their Speed Waaagh! made the wastelands their own, and they used them to strike at the hives from every direction. The wastelands became a battlefield, and the defenders had to fight the Orks on their own terms. Mechanised forces and Space Marine bikers hunted the Ork warbands, but the Orks were fast and numerous, and the war in the wastes dragged on.

Vigilus after the wars

The wars left Vigilus devastated. Its hives were damaged, its infrastructure was ruined, and its population was decimated. Yet the planet survived, and it remained in Imperial hands. The Nachmund Gauntlet stayed open, and the Imperium retained its link between the two halves of the galaxy.

The planet's survival was a victory, but it came at a terrible price. Vigilus will never be the same, and its people carry the scars of the wars. Its hives have been rebuilt, but the memories of the fighting remain. And the planet's enemies have not forgotten it. The Orks still lurk in the wastelands, the cults may still hide in the underhives, and the forces of Chaos still covet the Gauntlet. Vigilus remains a fortress at the edge of the abyss.

People & culture

The people of Vigilus are hive dwellers, used to crowded, polluted cities and hard work. They are tough and resilient, and they have survived the wars through sheer determination. But they are also deeply scarred, and many have lost family, friends and homes. The wars have changed them, and their culture has become one of defiance and survival.

The planet's leaders are divided by rivalries and ambition. The Vigilian Senate is made up of representatives from the various hives, as well as the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Ecclesiarchy and the military. These leaders often clash, and their disputes have sometimes hindered the planet's defence.

The wars have also given rise to new heroes and new legends. Ordinary citizens took up arms to defend their homes, and some became famous for their courage. Space Marines, soldiers and tech-priests also earned glory in the defence of Vigilus, and their deeds are celebrated across the planet.

Defenders & war-machine

Vigilus was defended by a wide range of forces. The planet's own militia and the Astra Militarum regiments stationed there formed the bulk of the defenders. The Adeptus Mechanicus provided war machines, servitors and skitarii. The Ultramarines, along with other Space Marine Chapters, led the fight against the planet's enemies. The Adepta Sororitas and the Inquisition also played a part.

The defenders were stretched thin, fighting on many fronts. They had to defend the hives, the highways and the wastelands, and they had to fight Orks, cultists and Chaos Space Marines. Their resources were limited, and they suffered heavy casualties. But they held on, and their resilience saved the planet.
