At a glance

The Maelstrom is a vast warp storm that lies within striking distance of the Segmentum Solar, the heart of the Imperium. It is smaller and less stable than the Eye of Terror, but it is far closer to Terra, and that makes it one of the most dangerous regions in the galaxy. Its shifting currents of warp energy hide countless worlds, many of them lawless havens for pirates, renegades and worse.

The Maelstrom's most infamous inhabitant is Huron Blackheart, the Tyrant of Badab, who fled into the storm with the remnants of his Astral Claws after the Badab War. There he founded the Red Corsairs, a renegade Chapter that has grown into one of the largest pirate fleets in the galaxy. From the Maelstrom, the Red Corsairs raid the shipping lanes of the Imperium, recruit traitors and plot revenge against the Imperium they once served.

The Imperium has long sought to contain the Maelstrom. The Astral Claws, the Chapter that became the Red Corsairs, once held the title of Maelstrom Warden and led its defence. Their betrayal showed how fragile the Imperium's watch on the Maelstrom truly was.

Geography & environment

The Maelstrom is a swirling region of warp storms, its edges constantly shifting and its interior a maze of currents and eddies. Within it, realspace and the warp mingle, though not as completely as in the Eye of Terror. Some of its worlds are habitable, others are hellish daemon-haunted rocks, and many are somewhere in between.

Travel through the Maelstrom is extremely dangerous. Its warp currents can hurl ships off course, tear them apart or trap them for centuries. Only the most skilled or desperate Navigators can find a way through, and many ships that enter are never seen again. Yet for those who know its secret routes, the Maelstrom is a perfect hiding place. Pirates and renegades use it to evade pursuit, and the Imperium has never been able to root them out.

The Maelstrom's worlds are as varied as they are dangerous. Some are fortified pirate havens, filled with docks, markets and fighting pits. Others are mining worlds or forge worlds, seized from the Imperium and turned to the service of renegades. A few are daemon worlds, where the warp has taken hold and the laws of reality bend to the will of the Dark Gods.

A haven for pirates

The Maelstrom has been a haven for pirates and renegades for millennia. Its proximity to the Imperium's busiest shipping lanes makes it an ideal base for raiders, who strike at merchant convoys and isolated worlds before vanishing back into the storm. Some pirates are lone captains with a single ship; others command fleets of dozens of vessels.

The pirate bands of the Maelstrom are a diverse and dangerous lot. Some are renegade Imperial officers who turned against their masters. Others are mutants, heretics or cultists who worship the Chaos gods. Ork Freebooterz roam the storm, fighting and looting wherever they go. And there are xenos raiders too, including the Drukhari, who use the Maelstrom as a hunting ground.

The pirates of the Maelstrom have no single leader, though the Red Corsairs are the most powerful among them. Huron Blackheart has brought many lesser bands under his control, either through conquest or alliance, and his fleet is one of the largest in the region. But the Maelstrom is a place of constant betrayal, and his rule is never secure.

History

The Maelstrom Wardens

The Imperium has long recognised the threat posed by the Maelstrom. Several Space Marine Chapters were based on worlds around its edges, and they patrolled the storm's borders, hunted pirates and protected the shipping lanes. The Astral Claws were granted the honour of the Maelstrom Warden, a title that gave their Chapter Master authority over the defence of the whole region. For a time, the arrangement kept the Maelstrom in check, and the Astral Claws were celebrated for their victories against the pirates.

The Badab War

The Astral Claws were led by Lufgt Huron, a charismatic and ambitious Chapter Master. Over time, he grew resentful of the Imperium's demands, and he began to build a power base of his own. He withheld the Astral Claws' tithe of gene-seed, gathered allies among other Chapters and declared himself the Tyrant of Badab. This sparked the Badab War, a bloody conflict that pitted Space Marine against Space Marine for over a decade.

The Badab War was a disaster for the Imperium. Several Chapters were drawn into the conflict on Huron's side, including the Lamenters, the Mantis Warriors and the Executioners. Loyalist Chapters, such as the Red Scorpions, the Fire Angels, the Howling Griffons and the Minotaurs, were sent to bring the rebels to heel. The fighting was savage, and losses on both sides were heavy. In the end, Huron was defeated, and his allies were forced to submit. But Huron himself escaped.

The Red Corsairs

Huron was terribly wounded in the final battle of the Badab War, but his followers spirited him away into the Maelstrom. There, his shattered body was rebuilt with crude bionics and, it is whispered, with the aid of dark sorcery, and he emerged as Huron Blackheart, a warlord sworn to the Dark Gods. His followers became the Red Corsairs, and they have raided the Imperium ever since. Over time, they have recruited renegades from many other Chapters, and their numbers have grown. They are now one of the most powerful renegade forces in the galaxy.

The Tyrant of Badab

Lufgt Huron was once one of the most respected Chapter Masters in the Imperium. He was a brilliant strategist, a charismatic leader and a fearless warrior. Under his command, the Astral Claws won countless victories, and their recruiting worlds prospered. Many in the region regarded him as a hero, and they looked to him for protection rather than to distant Terra.

But Huron was also ambitious and proud. He came to believe that the Imperium was failing, and that only strong leaders like himself could save it. He resented the demands of the Adeptus Terra, and he grew contemptuous of its officials. He began to see himself as a ruler in his own right, and he built a realm around the Badab Sector that answered to him alone.

His rebellion was carefully planned. He withheld the gene-seed tithe, which allowed him to increase the size of his Chapter beyond the limits set by the Codex Astartes. He recruited allies among other Chapters, persuading them that the Imperium had abandoned them. And when the Imperium moved against him, he was ready. The war that followed lasted more than a decade and cost the lives of thousands of Space Marines.

Today, Huron Blackheart is a lord of pirates, a renegade sworn to the Dark Gods, and an enemy of everything he once fought to protect. He is accompanied by a hideous warp-spawned familiar, the Hamadrya, and he leads his Red Corsairs with the same brilliance he once showed as a loyal commander. That is the true tragedy of the Tyrant of Badab: he remains everything that made him great, turned entirely to ruin.

Inside the Red Corsairs

The Red Corsairs are unlike any other renegade force. They began as a single Chapter, but they have grown by recruiting renegades from across the Imperium. Space Marines who have fallen from grace, whether through failure, heresy or ambition, are welcomed into their ranks. Huron offers them a new purpose, a share of the plunder and the chance to take revenge on the Imperium that cast them out.

Those who join must swear loyalty to Huron and prove themselves in battle. Many of them still wear the battered armour of their former Chapters, now marked with the Red Corsairs' insignia to show their new allegiance. The Red Corsairs are united by their contempt for the Imperium, but they are also divided by their different origins, and Huron must constantly balance their rivalries.

The Badab Sector

The Badab Sector lies on the edge of the Maelstrom, and it was the Astral Claws' domain. Its capital world, Badab Primaris, was the seat of Huron's power. During the Badab War, it became the focus of the conflict, and it was besieged by the loyalist Chapters. Its fortresses were bombarded, its cities razed and its people decimated. Civilians who had once hailed Huron as their protector found themselves caught between two armies of Space Marines, neither of which had the time or the inclination to spare them.

After the war, the Badab Sector was devastated. Many of its worlds were ruined, and its population was decimated. The Imperium attempted to restore order, but the sector remained unstable. The Red Corsairs continue to raid it, and its people live in fear. Some of its worlds still remember Huron as a hero, and the Inquisition watches them closely for signs of lingering loyalty to the Tyrant.

The daemons of the storm

The Maelstrom is not only a haven for pirates. It is also a place where the warp is close, and where daemons can cross into realspace. On some of its worlds, the barrier between realities is so thin that daemons walk openly, and the inhabitants worship them as gods. These daemon-haunted worlds are among the most dangerous places in the Maelstrom, and even the Red Corsairs tread carefully there.

The Red Corsairs have made pacts with the powers of the warp. Huron Blackheart serves no single god, but he is willing to bargain with any of them, and his sorcerers summon daemons to fight alongside his warriors. These alliances make the Red Corsairs even more dangerous, but they also come at a price. The gods demand sacrifices, and the Red Corsairs pay them in blood.

The storm itself is also a danger. Its currents shift without warning, and its tides can hurl ships across vast distances or trap them in its depths. Navigators who enter the Maelstrom risk madness, and many ships are lost with all hands. The pirates who survive there have learned to read the storm's moods, and they use its currents to evade pursuit.

Inhabitants & culture

The inhabitants of the Maelstrom are a diverse and dangerous lot. Pirates, renegades, mutants and cultists live side by side, bound together by a shared contempt for the Imperium. Their culture is one of violence and greed, where strength is the only law and betrayal is common. They worship the Chaos gods or no gods at all, and they live for the next raid and the next prize.

The Red Corsairs are the most powerful force in the Maelstrom, and their influence shapes its culture. They are pirates, raiders and warriors, and they value strength and cunning above all. They recruit renegades from across the Imperium, offering them a place in their ranks in exchange for loyalty. Those who join must prove themselves in battle, and many die before they earn their place.

The Maelstrom's worlds are home to many others besides the Red Corsairs. Some are ruled by petty warlords, others by cults or daemons. Some are havens for refugees and outcasts, who have fled the Imperium in search of freedom. Life in the Maelstrom is hard and dangerous, but for many, it is better than the oppression of the Imperium.

Defenders & war-machine

The Maelstrom is defended by its inhabitants, and by the warp itself. Its storms make it difficult to navigate, and its pirates and renegades are always ready to fight. The Red Corsairs are the most formidable of its defenders, with a fleet of warships and an army of renegade Space Marines. They are supported by cultists, mutants and daemons, as well as allied pirate bands.

The Imperium has never been able to conquer the Maelstrom. Its storms and its defenders are too strong, and the Imperium's resources are stretched thin. Instead, it has sought to contain the Maelstrom, guarding its borders and protecting the shipping lanes. But the Red Corsairs and their allies continue to raid the Imperium, and the Maelstrom remains a constant threat.
