Background

Before the Horus Heresy broke into the open, the Warmaster made careful arrangements for those of his brothers he could not turn. Sanguinius, Lord of the Blood Angels, was one of Horus's closest friends and perhaps the most beloved of all the Primarchs. Horus could not hope to sway him, nor could he afford to leave the Ninth Legion free to interfere. So he sent the Blood Angels away — far out to the Signus Cluster, on the pretext of eradicating a xenos threat that had cut off contact with the region.

What awaited them there had nothing to do with xenos. The Word Bearers had spent years preparing the cluster, corrupting its worlds and opening the way for the daemonic. Through the Keeper of Secrets Kyriss the Perverse, brought into the material world through a cultist vessel, they had raised a monstrous temple, the Cathedral of the Mark, on Signus Prime. The entire cluster had become a trap built to break the Blood Angels — either drowning them in a tide of daemons or turning them into something Horus could use.

The Blood Angels knew none of this. They had heard only rumours of strife, and the order to proceed to Signus came with the Warmaster's seal. Sanguinius, who trusted Horus implicitly, led his Legion into the cluster expecting a hard but conventional campaign. He carried with him the burden that had haunted him for years: dark visions of his own death, glimpsed but never fully understood.

Horus knew his brother well enough to choose the cruellest test. The Blood Angels carried a secret shame, a flaw in their gene-seed that had troubled the Legion since before Sanguinius was found. Their discipline and their love for their father kept it buried. A war against the Blood God, fought in a place where rage itself was a weapon, was exactly the kind of battle that might drag that flaw into the light.

The Forces

The Blood Angels came in full strength, perhaps the greatest gathering of the Legion in its history. With them came their fleet, including the Red Tear and other capital ships, and auxiliary forces. Among the Legion's leaders were Raldoron, First Captain and Sanguinius's trusted friend, and Azkaellon, master of the Sanguinary Guard. Sanguinius led in person, the angel at the head of his host.

Their enemies were not mortal. The Signus Cluster swarmed with daemons of Khorne, warp-spawned horrors that seemed to pour out of the very fabric of the worlds. The Word Bearers' cults and sorcerers manipulated the cluster from behind. At the head of the daemon host stood a Bloodthirster of immense power: Ka'Bandha, a Greater Daemon of the Blood God who had sworn himself to the corruption of the Blood Angels.

Signus Prime itself was hardly a world any longer. Its skies were stained red, its cities had been gutted by cult uprisings, and the air was thick with the stench of slaughter. Survivors of the original population had been driven mad or turned into sacrificial victims. The Blood Angels found charnel pits, desecrated temples and arcane sigils carved into the bones of the dead — the grim work of the Word Bearers' cults, prepared long in advance of the Legion's arrival.

It was, by any mortal measure, an impossible enemy. Bullets and blades could destroy a daemon's physical form, but the Neverborn simply returned to the warp to be reborn, while every Blood Angel who fell was gone forever. The longer the battle lasted, the stronger the daemons grew, and the more the Legion's own rage worked in the enemy's favour. Sanguinius understood quickly that this was not a war he could win by attrition; it would have to be decided at its heart.

Phases of the Battle

From the moment the fleet entered the cluster, the trap closed. The worlds of Signus had already been swallowed by madness. Daemons boarded the ships through warp-touched breaches; crews were driven insane; strange voices whispered over the vox. One of the most terrible blows fell on the Red Tear. Its commander, Admiral DuCade, lost his mind under the daemonic assault and turned the warship towards Signus Prime. The Red Tear plunged into the atmosphere and crash-landed, its crew and Astartes complement facing death on impact and then a daemon host on the surface.

The Blood Angels made planetfall to rescue what they could and to destroy the source of the corruption. On Signus Prime, they fought their way through hordes of Bloodletters and Flesh Hounds toward the Cathedral of the Mark. The battles were vicious, close and bloody. Many Blood Angels found themselves fighting in states of rage that frightened even their brothers. In the swirling madness, a Space Wolf named Helik Redknife, who had travelled with the Blood Angels, was among those killed.

Far above, the Legion's fleet fought its own battle against daemonic attack and the madness that threatened to consume the crews. Sanguinius pushed his warriors on, cutting a path towards the heart of the enemy, determined to destroy whatever force had trapped his Legion. As the Blood Angels drew closer to the Cathedral, they discovered something far worse than xenos: evidence that the Word Bearers — Imperial Astartes — had built the trap.

The fighting on the ground was savage. Bloodletters cut through power armour with hellblades that burned like molten iron. Flesh Hounds ran down squads that broke formation. The Blood Angels answered with bolter, sword and flamer, and for every brother who fell they took a dozen daemons with them — but the daemons did not tire, and every death only fed the Blood God's power in the cluster. Battle-brothers who had always been calm and noble found themselves screaming, laughing and tearing at their enemies with their bare hands. Some of their brothers wondered, quietly, whether they were still fighting daemons at all, or something inside themselves.

Aftermath

The Blood Angels survived Signus, but at enormous cost. Thousands of warriors were dead, and many of the survivors carried the Red Thirst inside them — a hunger that would grow over the following centuries into the Black Rage, the curse that drives Blood Angels to madness and death. Sanguinius was left shaken by what he had learned: his beloved brother Horus had sent him to die.

Malcador the Sigillite had his own watchers in the cluster, and the truth of what had happened there would eventually reach Terra. For the Blood Angels themselves, the battle was a turning point. They had faced the Blood God and survived, but they had been marked. Ka'Bandha would return at the Siege of Terra, where Sanguinius would once again face and banish him at the Eternity Gate.

Signus Prime is still remembered in the Blood Angels' oral histories as a place of great courage and great horror. It was where the Angel learned of Horus's treachery, where his sons first tasted the Red Thirst, and where the Legion's long, tragic struggle against its own blood truly began.

The Legion did not return to Terra directly. Caught by the warp storms that wracked the galaxy, the Blood Angels eventually made their way towards Ultramar, where they joined Guilliman in the troubled days of Imperium Secundus. Throughout that time, Sanguinius and his Apothecaries struggled to contain the curse they had brought out of Signus — a secret the Legion guarded with their lives.
