Background

When news of Horus's treachery finally reached Terra, it came wrapped in horror. On Isstvan III, the Warmaster had purged the loyal elements of four of his own Legions with a virus bombardment and a ground massacre, leaving only a tiny band of survivors to fight on in the ruins. The Emperor, struggling to understand how His favoured son could have turned, dispatched seven Legions to Isstvan to crush the rebellion before it could spread. It was meant to be the swift, decisive answer to a tragedy. It became the greatest betrayal in human history.

Rogal Dorn, Praetorian of Terra, had been tasked with organising the retribution force. On paper it was overwhelming: seven full Legions, perhaps a quarter of a million Astartes, against the four battered Legions loyal to Horus. Dorn's own Imperial Fists were meant to join the assault, but were recalled to Terra to begin fortifying the Palace. The command of the punitive host was divided among the Primarchs who answered the call: Ferrus Manus of the Iron Hands, Vulkan of the Salamanders, Corax of the Raven Guard, and four more whose Legions would follow in the second wave — Konrad Curze, Perturabo, Lorgar and Alpharius.

Horus had chosen the battlefield carefully. After Isstvan III, he withdrew his forces to the neighbouring world of Isstvan V, an ancient, dead planet scattered with the ruins of a long-lost xeno civilisation. There, in a vast basin called the Urgall Depression, he dug in. The traitors raised fortifications along the Urgall Hills and prepared their kill zones. Ammunition was stockpiled. Gun-lines were laid out. Everything about the position invited the loyalists to commit to a frontal assault.

What none of the loyalist Primarchs knew was that four of the seven Legions sent to punish Horus had already secretly sworn themselves to him. The Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion had been turned long before the first drop pod fell. Isstvan V was not a counterattack. It was a trap baited with the Imperium's own vengeance.

The Forces

The first wave was made up of the Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard. Ferrus Manus, proud and furious at the treachery of his brothers — especially Fulgrim, whom he had loved most of all — demanded the honour of leading the assault. Vulkan's Salamanders and Corax's Raven Guard deployed alongside him. Together they numbered tens of thousands of Astartes, supported by armour, gunships and the warrior-elites of each Legion: the Iron Hands' Morlocks, the Salamanders' Pyroclasts and Firedrakes, and the Raven Guard's Mor Deythan.

Waiting in the Urgall Depression were the Sons of Horus, the World Eaters, the Emperor's Children and the Death Guard — the four Legions purged of their loyalists at Isstvan III. Despite their losses, they were hardened veterans fighting from prepared positions, and they had nothing left to lose. Behind the loyalists, in orbit, the second wave waited: the Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion. Their task, so far as the loyalists understood, was to reinforce the landing zone and close the trap on the traitors. In truth, they were the trap.

Phases of the Battle

The first wave struck like a hammer. Drop pods and gunships poured onto the plains below the Urgall Hills, and the Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard surged into the traitor lines. For a while it seemed the gamble might work. The fury of the three Legions drove the traitors back from their forward positions; whole sections of the fortifications were overrun, and the Sons of Horus and World Eaters suffered heavy losses. In the chaos of the advance, Ferrus Manus — consumed by rage at his brother Fulgrim — broke away from the coordinated plan and led his elite companies deep into the enemy lines, far ahead of his allies.

Then the traitor host made a planned withdrawal, drawing the attackers forward into the heart of the Depression. It was at this moment that the second wave landed. To the exhausted loyalists, the arrival of four fresh Legions looked like salvation: the Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion landing behind them, ready to deliver the killing blow.

Instead they opened fire. Bolters, heavy weapons and artillery hammered into the backs of the loyalist forces at point-blank range. Whole companies of Salamanders and Raven Guard were annihilated in the opening volleys, cut down before they could even comprehend what was happening. The Iron Warriors' artillery shredded the landing zone. The Night Lords fell on the confused survivors with knives and chainswords, revelling in the slaughter. The Alpha Legion struck with surgical precision, and the Word Bearers chanted praises to their dark gods as they killed. The four traitor Legions that had been in retreat turned around and attacked from the front. The loyalists were caught between two fires on an open plain, and the Drop Site became a slaughterhouse.

The killing went on for hours. Thunderhawks attempting to evacuate survivors were shot out of the sky. Salamanders and Raven Guard formed shrinking islands of resistance, fighting back-to-back amid mounds of their own dead. Many were simply overwhelmed. The Iron Hands, isolated deep within the enemy lines with their Primarch, were surrounded and broken apart. The slaughter was not clean. Bolt shells burst Astartes open from within; heavy flamers turned trapped squads into pillars of fire; the World Eaters waded into broken formations and hacked the wounded apart where they lay. Survivors described the ground of the Depression as a carpet of ceramite and torn flesh, the dust of the dead world turned to red mud. Warriors who had fought side by side in the Great Crusade recognised the heraldry of the brothers killing them, and some of the traitors laughed as they did it.

Aftermath

The Drop Site Massacre was the single worst defeat the Imperium ever suffered. In a single day, three Legions were reduced to fragments. The Iron Hands lost their Primarch and most of their fighting strength, and in their grief became colder, harder and more machine-like. The Raven Guard were left with too few warriors to function as a Legion, and Corax would spend the rest of the Heresy trying to rebuild. The Salamanders, believing their father dead, retreated to Nocturne in mourning.

Strategically, Isstvan V made Horus's rebellion unstoppable in the short term. With the loyalist punitive force annihilated and three Legions crippled, the traitors had the initiative and the numbers to march on Terra. The Emperor and Dorn could no longer hope to end the war quickly; they could only prepare for a siege of the Throneworld.

The survivors carried the scars of that day forever. Iron Hands Clan Companies still recite the names of the dead. Raven Guard warriors speak of Isstvan V as the place where their Legion died and something new was born. And in the Eye of Terror, the traitors still remember it as their greatest victory — the day the Imperium's sons first turned their guns on each other in earnest, and the old dream of the Great Crusade died with them.Isstvan III had already shown what was coming. There, the loyalists purged from the four traitor Legions had held the ruins of the Choral City for weeks, praying for the rescue fleet. They were finally crushed shortly before it arrived — Saul Tarvitz died in the last assault, and Garviel Loken was left for dead in the rubble. The loyal Legions who dropped onto Isstvan V believed they were avenging those men. Instead they shared their fate, and the two massacres have been remembered together ever since as the moment the galaxy learned that Astartes could be made to kill Astartes without hesitation or mercy.
